Congratulations, you shone brightly above the competition and got a place! Come and prepare for your new life as a student midwife and meet current midwifery students, other successful applicants and most likely some of your new cohort! Learn about NMC guidelines / codes of conduct and how to manage emotions, shifts, money, studying, home life and more. Take home essential midwifery text books from your University's reading list at a very generous, direct from the publisher discount (Thank you Elsevier!)
The day is written by and led by Josie SMNET's Co-Founder and Director. Josie is supported by Annie, SMNET's Principal HR & Employment Law Consultant. You will meet current student midwives who will be coming along to support, guide and answer any questions you may have.
Our Preparing for Uni and Placement training day is for those with places and is based in Camden, London.
This will be a super day full of all the good stuff you will need to start your new life as a STUDENT MIDWIFE!!
Most importantly you will be guided through your new responsibilities under the Nursing and Midwifery Council's new guidelines, it is crucial that you fully understand the role of the NMC and what your personal liabilities are.
We will also be providing you with a PowerPoint presentation and some fun role playing, guiding you through and answering any questions on;
- Placements - Labour ward, postnatal ward, antenatal ward and community
- Midwifery skills - Have a go at taking blood pressure and much more!
- Study skills - What to expect, how to survive assignments and presentations including our SMNET top tips
- Money and bursary issues - How to manage on a budget and get your bursary sorted
- Work life balance - Guilt free studying and time with family and friends
- Managing emotions - How to cope with the demands of the course and the demands of practice covering difficult topics like stillbirth and maternal death
You will also get to meet current student midwives and be able to ask them anything you like! They will be giving a talk about what to expect and their personal experiences to date - great to hear first hand whats in store!
Elsevier will also be giving you a presentation on their new Evolve range - super e-books where you can search the entire text in one click and loads of other clever stuff! - Amazing new technology to support your learning. They will also be offering a discount of 15-20% (depending on what you chose) if you fancy buying any of your text books on the day! You will be able to peruse all the midwifery text books at Elsevier HQ - where our training day is held - and take them home - same day! All those attending will receive a 30 day free trial of 'Skills for Midwifery Practice' Johnson and Taylor (Evolve Edition, 2010).
The day is designed to allay fears, answer questions and equip you with the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to embark on your new life! You will also get to meet other members of SMNET who are in the same boat and quite possibly members of your new cohort at your Uni! We will be matching people and Uni's to get as many of you from the same Uni on the same day!
We look forward to meeting you (or seeing you again if you have been on the Preparing for Interview course!) and getting you prepared for the roller coaster ride of your life - becoming a real life student midwife!
